I retrieved my ATU (which was on loan) and after more trolling of the internet decided to do some modifcations to it. Two extra earth connetions were added and a bleed resistor of 1 Mega ohm fitted. This resistor is a 1/2 watt carbon. This will give a path for the static to earth.
The kite wire antenna is attached to the long wire terminal and the earth terminal is connected to the anchor stake. The additional black terminal gives the option to use a counterpoise laid on the ground.
The resistor of 1 Mega ohm must be a pure carbon else its inductance will change with frequency and will give you a few problems matching the antenna. Initial thoughts of the power dissipation of the resistor being only 500mW would cause the resistor to over heat and possibly destroy itself. After several hours of transmitting at 100 Watts there has been no physical damage observed.
