The kite used is a box-delta these are known as lift kites. This is mine. This box-delta has a wing span of about 5 feet. Kites built to this design are very stable and produce a large amount of lift. Also these are designed to over fly the teather and are quite happy to fly directly overhead, especially in stronger winds.
When launching and recovering the kite I always wear gloves to protect my hands against friction burns from the string and also take special care to make sure no loops can catch my fingers/hands. It is quite surprising how much force is generated even with this "small" kite.
